Is addition of sodium fluoride to cyclical etidronate beneficial in the treatment of corticosteroid induced osteoporosis?

Article Abstract:

The effect of sodium fluoride (NaF) on the bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine when added to etidronate seems superior to etidronate alone in some patients with osteoporosis. Forty patients with osteoporosis who were being treated with corticosteroids were given etidronate with NaF added or etidronate alone. After 2 years, the 20 patients taking the etidronate with NaF had a 9.3% increase in the BMD of the lumbar spine while the other 20 had only a 0.3% increase, a difference of 8.9%.

Alendronate or alfacalcidol in glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis

Article Abstract:

The effects of alfacalcidol and alendronate in patients with a rheumatic disease who are receiving glucocorticods are investigated and compared. The results have shown that alendronate is more effective in the prevention of glucocorticoid-induced bone loss than alfacalcidol in patients with rheumatic diseases.
