A new-for-old urinary bladder

Article Abstract:

Research in which it was possible to reconstruct a functional dog bladder from cells obtained by biopsy of the bladder wall may have significant implications for the treatment of patients who have lost their own bladders. Smooth-muscle cells were isolated from the outside of the bladder wall, while urothelial cells were isolated from the inside. The cells were expanded in culture for four weeks, with the smooth-muscle cells then being seeded onto the outer surface of a bladder-shaped polyester textile. The urothelial cells were seeded onto the inner surface. It is not known why the seeded smooth-muscle cells apparently retained a contractile phenotype.

Isocyanates and benzene control

Article Abstract:

The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a significant revision of its guidance note concerning health and safety precautions for employees who work with isocyanates. Employees at risk from isocyanate exposure include those who produce polyurethane items or footwear, and members of the printing and thermal insulation industries. Health risks from isocyanate exposure include rhinitis, asthma and dermatitis. The HSE has also revised its leaflet for employees who are exposed to benzene. The leaflet notes the intention to reduce the maximum exposure limit to one part per million.
