Recurrent aphthous ulcers: a review of diagnosis and treatment

Article Abstract:

Aphthous ulcers, or canker sores, are common oral diseases. They can affect the lining of the mouth, parts of the tongue and the tonsils. They appear to have a genetic component and some researchers believe they are caused by an infectious organism. They are often associated with Behcet's disease, gastrointestinal diseases, HIV infection, low levels of white blood cells, and IgA deficiency. Many will resolve without treatment, but more severe ulcers can be treated with antibiotics, anesthetics and corticosteroids.

The diagnosis and management of recurrent aphthous stomatitis: a consensus approach

Article Abstract:

Doctors still do not know exactly what causes recurrent aphthous stomatitis but topical corticosteroid drugs are the most effective treatment. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is the medical term for chronic ulcer formation inside the mouth. Stress, injury, and some types of food may be risk factors. Doctors should try to identify any risk factors so the patient can eliminate them.
