Risk watch: product recalls

Article Abstract:

Risk controls must be maintained by manufacturers from product development through to manufacture and distribution, with undetected hazards subsequently resulting in costly product recalls. Automobile manufacture Saab invested about 5 million pounds sterling to develop third-row, rear-facing child seats for a new vehicle but abandoned the plans after discovering passenger safety was at risk in an accident due to the crumple design of the vehicle's rear end. Automobile manufacturer BMW also recalled three million vehicles due to problems with heat exchangers.

BS 8800 and risk assessment

Article Abstract:

The British Standards Institution Guide BS 8800 outlines the six required processes in the risk assessment section of the occupational health and safety management system. Each activity within the workplace should be identified according to risk by judging the likelihood of the risk happening and the result of such an occurrence. Once the level of risk has been assessed a planned response should be determined. The plans should be constantly reviewed and altered if the situation changes.
