The untouchables

Article Abstract:

India has an AIDS epidemic, yet AIDS patients are stigmatized and lacking carers. Four million people across India have either AIDS or HIV, and 1.77 million people will die due to AIDS before 2002. Most nurses will not care for AIDS patients. Inadequate levels of infection control, glove supply and clean water supply add to the problems. The city of Bombay, which has almost 2,200 new AIDS cases per day, typifies the national situation. Some public figures in Bombay appear to address the problem but stigmatization is ingrained, provisions are poor, and infection prevention seems unlikely.

Tenko revisited

Article Abstract:

The experiences of a group of Second World War nurses provided the inspiration for the 1997 Hollywood film Paradise Road. The British and Australian women were imprisoned in a Japanese camp in Sumatra for almost four years. The women formed a choir to maintain their spirits in the squalid camp conditions. Producer Sue Milliken heard a tape of an Australian concert which revived the choir music, found out more about the women's stories, and produced the film which stars Glenn Close and Pauline Collins. Camp survivor Phyllis Thom recalls her own experience of the camp.
