Thrombopoietin

Article Abstract:

The discovery of thrombopoietin in 1994 raises the hope of a better treatment for thrombocytopenia. Thrombocytopenia is a drop in the number of blood platelets, which are crucial for blood clotting. Platelet transfusions are the main treatment, but they are expensive and not an ideal treatment. Thrombopoietin is a hormone that stimulates the production of blood platelets. Studies have shown that it can reverse thrombocytopenia and also raise platelet levels after chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation.

Lineage-specific hematopoietic growth factors

Article Abstract:

The mechanism and clinical applications of three hematopoietic growth factors related with erythropoietin, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, and thrombopoietin are surveyed. The clinical use of hematopoietic growth factors has improved the care of patients with inadequate blood-cell production, but these agents are costly, require parenteral administration, and could occasionally induce untoward effects.
