Racial Disparity in Influenza Vaccination: Does Managed Care Narrow the Gap Between African Americans and Whites?

Article Abstract:

Elderly African-Americans are less likely than whites to be vaccinated against influenza even if they belong to a managed care plan rather than a fee-for-service plan. This was the conclusion of a study of 13,674 Medicare beneficiaries who were covered by managed care or fee-for-service insurance.

Use of high-cost operative procedures by Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in for-profit and not-for-profit health plans

Article Abstract:

For-profit health plans are just as likely to pay for expensive medical procedures as not-for-profit health plans, according to researchers who analyzed the use of 12 high-cost procedures on 3,726,065 Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in 254 health plans in 1997. In no case were the for-profit health plans less likely to pay for expensive procedures than not-for-profit health plans. In fact, for-profit plans were actually more likely than not-for-profit plans to pay for a partial colectomy and a closed cholecystectomy.

Relationship between quality of care and racial disparities in medical health plans

Article Abstract:

The relationship between quality and racial disparity was assessed to determine whether high-performing plans exhibit smaller racial disparities and to identify plans with high-quality and low disparity. It is concluded that in Medicaid plans, disparities vary widely and are only weakly correlated with the overall quality of care.
