Vanadate enhances but does not normalize glucose transport and insulin receptor phosphorylation in skeletal muscle from obese women with gestational diabetes mellitus

Article Abstract:

Decreased metabolism of blood sugar during pregnancy is not a result of decreased activity of an enzyme called protein-tyrosine phosphatase inhibitor. All pregnant women experience insulin resistance but the exact mechanism is unknown.

Longitudinal changes in maternal serum leptin concentrations, body composition, and resting metabolic rate in pregnancy

Article Abstract:

Pregnant women appear to be resistant to leptin just as some obese people are. Leptin is a hormone produced in fat tissue that maintains proper body weight. Researchers measured blood levels of leptin as well as body composition and resting metabolic rate throughout the pregnancies of 10 women. Although leptin levels increased 66% from early to late pregnancy, body fat and oxygen consumption only increased 9%.

The effect of oral terbutaline on maternal glucose metabolism and energy expenditure in pregnancy

Article Abstract:

The drug terbutaline appears to have adverse effects on glucose metabolism. This drug is commonly used to treat premature labor because it stops uterine contractions. Researchers measured blood glucose, insulin levels and glucose production by the liver in six pregnant women who took the drug every six hours for 24 hours. Compared to measurements taken when the women were not taking the drug, terbutaline increased glucose levels without affecting glucose production by the liver. The drug also raised insulin levels and increased insulin resistance. Oxygen consumption and energy expenditure also increased.
