Resident-centered care in assisted living

Article Abstract:

Administrators and staffworkers, as well as the residents themselves, of 20 assisted living (AL) settings were polled to assess how resident-centered care is provided in these facilities. Although the residents interviewed attested to being allowed to lead fairly independent lives, some of them reported having health and long-term care needs that were unmet and having limited participation in 'community' activities. Results suggest that, although AL settings can offer elders safe and independent living, it is simply too early to say that all of them promote choice, community-building and care.

How charisma cloaks incompetence

Article Abstract:

A variety of studies conducted since 1965 indicate that a significant number of employees are very dissatisfied with their supervisors. Over the years of taking surveys, on the average, anywhere from 60% to 75% of employees surveyed believe the most stressful aspect of work involves communicating with supervisors. Generally, there are reasons why so many managers are unskilled and ineffective: managers often do not know how to learn from experience; mangers may put too much emphasis on being well-liked; and managers may be narcissists and unable to take suggestions or feedback.

Silent myocardial ischemia and low aerobic capacity: an unlucky combination

Article Abstract:

A recent study of the relationship between exercise-induced silent myocardial ischemia and low aerobic fitness in apparently healthy middle-aged and older men is discussed. The study provides new evidence that exercise-induced myocardial ischemia in combination with low aerobic capacity is a useful predictor of future coronary events.
