Organizational change and outdoor management education

Article Abstract:

Outdoor management education (OME) is an effective tool for management training and development. OME training is comprised of a series of exercises undertaken in outdoor settings by groups of participants, designed in such a way as to promote risk-taking, problem-solving and teamwork. These exercises are followed by sessions wherein participants discuss their experiences and share what they have learned. An examination of the effects of an OME program in an information processing business has revealed the positive effects of OME training. Specifically, it was found to enhance participant knowledge about effective communication, group problem-solving and teamwork, as well as organizational commitment, self-esteem and intentions to apply lessons derived from training. Moreover, behavioral change and improvements were observed in a number of organizational results even after three years.

Competitive tendering and industrial relations in the NHS - the long-term effects on the individual

Article Abstract:

A survey of 280 UK hospital catering managers indicates compulsory competitive tendering has lowered staff morales and job satisfaction. Managers have cut costs by reducing full-time workers, used more temporary help, and rearranged shift patterns. Although individual morale may have suffered, managers reported better relations with trade unions because of the tendering process.

Briefing-debriefing: using a reflexive organizational learning model from the military to enhance the performance of surgical teams

Article Abstract:

This article studies the features of the briefing-debriefing team-based learning model employed by the Israel Air Force to improve team reflexivity. The feasibility of the model in human resource management of surgical departments in hospitals is examined.
