Organizing in the New Economy: the Amazon.com campaign

Article Abstract:

This article examines the difficulties encountered by contingent workers in unorganized industries when attempting a traditional union-organizing campaign, because of the realities of their work environment, their status as contingent employees and/or current labor laws. The author suggests that new methods of building work organizations are necessary when contractors want to organize but contracts are not readily available; the case of 400 customer service workers efforts to unionize at Amazon.com's Seattle office are considered.
