Gender and professional ethics in the IT industry

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to evaluate the ethical obligation of the information technology (IT) industry towards addressing gender issues, particularly that of the female workforce. Information technology is an industry that is experiencing rapid growth, but evidence indicates that women are under-represented particularly in all member nations of the European Union. The study also showed that the IT industry is not neutral when it comes to gender issues and that it makes little effort to train and retain its female workforce.

Not all codes are created equal: the software engineering code of ethics, a success story

Article Abstract:

Practitioners of the software engineering industry have come to accept the ethical and professional obligations involved in their profession with the development of the Software Engineering Code of Ethics and Professional Practice. Terms such as 'bugs' and 'glitches' demonstrate software developers' cavalier approach to software errors. With a code of ethics by which to follow, software developers now take responsibility for the final quality of the software they develop.

Cyberspace: the final frontier?

Article Abstract:

Computers have made a great impact on people's lives and this technology's power to affect many facets of people's lives appears to be limitless. The growing adoption of computer technology, inevitably, raises ethical questions as its diffusion into society necessarily creates new relationships and perhaps destroys others. For instance, the increasing use of electronic mail has raised concerns about privacy, accessibility and availability.
