An anti-terror STEP

Article Abstract:

The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has started a three-year test and evaluation process of more than 40 US ports to determine how vulnerable the facilities are to terrorist attacks. The tests, called the Port Security Training Exercise Program (PortSTEP), are designed to bring TSA, the Cast Guard, port officials and local law-enforcement agencies together to challenge port's maritime security plan and offer insights into improving securevlity.

The Coast Guard is reorganizing its command chain at the nationEs largest ports to ensure that a single commander is responsible for all missions and operations in the area. The service is creating Coast Guard esectorE, field units that integrate the functions performed by different units in the nationEs largest maritime shipping areas, including groups, vessel traffic services, marine safety offices and air stations.

Escape plans: Efforts aim to ensure new boats don't become underwater traps

Article Abstract:

The US Coast Guard is looking for ways to prevent crew members from becoming trapped underwater if one of the new boats capsizes and is also replacing many of its open cockpit boats with vessels that have enclosed cabins. It is apparently testing equipment such as an inflatable airbag that would help a Defender-class boat right itself after capsizing is being evaluated.
