Competition for RAN submarine combat system

Article Abstract:

The Department of Defense of Australia is set to award a contract to develop a submarine combat system for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Potential contractors, such as British Aerospace-led group and Lockheed Martin Manasis, are looking forward to improve their chances of securing the contract. The deal requires the development of a new generation of submarines for the RAN, the mid-life updating of the RAN's present Collins-class submarines and the improvement of the Collins submarines' system for combat operations.

British behemoth

Article Abstract:

British Aerospace PLC's (BAe) $13 billion acquisition of GEC's Marconi Electric Systems (MES) was criticized by defense officians in Europe and the US. BAe was almost compelled to acquire MES because GEC had offered to sell MES to US defense firms Lockheed Martin or Raytheon. Critics said the acquisition could hinder the development of industrial integration among defense firms in the UK, Germany and France.
