Cote d'Ivoire puts elections on hold

Article Abstract:

The Cote d'Ivoire elections scheduled to be held on 30th October, 2005 was indefinitely postponed, thus leaving the peace process without any focus and increasing the chance of renewed violence as another deadline passed. The postponement of the elections, which were intended to end the frozen conflict in the country, follows the rejection of South African mediation by the Forces Nouvelles, which has controlled the northern half of the country since attempting to overthrow President Laurent Gbagbo in September 2002.
