Ohio subs would be best basing mode for new interceptor missile

Article Abstract:

The US ballistic-missile defense system would be significantly enhanced with the deployment of the new Kinetic Energy Interceptor (KEI) being developed to intercept hostile missiles in the boost and midcourse phases of attack. The defending KEI missile, designed to operate at more than twice the speed of the existing SM-3 defensive missile, has to launch quickly and streak to its target even before the attacker's final trajectory is known.

Submarines: Ballistic-missile submarines (SSBN)/ guided-missile submarines (SSGN)

Article Abstract:

Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) are the United States' only under water strategic deterrent force as a result of the successful negotiations with the Russian Republic. The fiscal year 2003 budget had funds for the conversion of the four oldest Ohio-class SSBNs into nuclear-powered guided missile submarines (SSGNs).
