Pragmatic Rafale: A study in French philosophy

Article Abstract:

Dassault's Rafale fighter with aerodynamic and structural configuration was formally declared operational as Flotille 12F of the French Navy's Aeronaval as its first user in 2004. The compact aircraft, designed to have a small spot factor on an aircraft carrier with the complexity of folding wings, has a full set of air-to-air real-beam ground mapping and Doppler beam sharpening (DBS) mapping together with an early terrain-following mode.

The state of the art and the applications of an aerial refueling capability are assessed, as over 30 countries possess an aerial refueling capability. Advanced-technology pod and boom system have emerged, and Australia, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US all have new tankers plans for new tankers.

Joint Strike Fighter-weathering the storm as competitors circle

The Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program is engaged in a critical design review for lightened, optimized design after it faced a major crisis in 2004. The most immediate issue encountered by the JSF is the excessive weight factor.
