Sailing into the sunset?

Article Abstract:

The US merchant marine fleet provides military forces with a sea-lift capability, hospital ships and prepositioned supply ships during times of security emergencies and wars. However, an effective fulfillment of that duty is threatened by foreign registrations of US fleets to avoid restrictive US regulations and to enjoy preferential treatment from foreign governments. This trend is leading to declines in fleet operations that may hamper defence logistic and resupply operations.
