Seapower/Maritime

Article Abstract:

The Transportation Dept's Maritime Administration (MARAD) enforces federal laws that protect a US merchant marine so that the latter can provide the country's shipping needs for domestic and international water-borne commerce and national security. The agency is also tasked with ensuring that the US has sufficient shipbuilding and repair services, port capacity and intermodal water and land-side transportation. MARAD has expanded its focus on logistics, international trade practices, intermodalism, ports and environmental activities in the wake of globalization.

Military Sealift Command: Ships

Article Abstract:

Military Sealift Command (MSC) proved itself to be one of the US Navy's most valuable commands in 2003, by providing maritime support to all components of the Department of Defense and occasionally to other government agencies during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. At the peak of MSC involvement until April 2003, 167 MSC-operated ships were directly supporting the warfighting effort and its accomplishments are a result of the increase in US strategic sealift capability.
