The Syrians stand accused

Article Abstract:

The United Nations (UN) preliminary report on the car-bomb assassination of the former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri on February 14, 2005, has accused Syria of failing to cooperate to the investigations and has stated that the plot must have had the blessing of Syrian security officials. The UN investigative team has cast a dark shadow on those officials who are close to President Assad, including his brother Maher and his brother-in-law General Assef Shawkat.

Lebanon after the war

Article Abstract:

The month-long confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah has sharpened political and sectarian division and has increased external intervention, making internal Lebanese dialogue more problematic. The United Nations (UN) mission is facing a Catch 22 situation as it cannot afford to engage directly in disarming Hezbollah and also cannot leave Lebanon so long as disarmament does not take place, because this would restart the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

What's next in Lebanon?

Article Abstract:

In the wake of Rafiq Al-Hariri's assassination, the future of Lebanon is debated with particular reference to the country's equation with Syria. Even though Syria's military withdrawal from Lebanon may solve many problems, it is unlikely that the influence of Damascus will lessen materially given the businesses run by Syrian generals in Lebanon and the large number of Syrian workers who continue to enrich Syria's empty coffers from their earnings in Lebanon.
