Article Abstract:

Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd. will lease four ex-UK Royal Navy Upholder-class diesel-electric submarines to Canada's Maritime Command (MARCOM) under an eight-year contract that includes a latter option for the purchase of the vessels. The deal also closes a three-year effort by the UK Ministry of Defence and the company to sell the boats, which are to replace MARCOM's three Oberon submarines. MARCOM seeks to base three of the Upholder submarines on Canada's east coast, while the remaining one will be deployed for the west coast.

Canada takes expeditionary force to task

Article Abstract:

A report reveals that Canada has worked out a new amphibious force concept to inform the development of an indigenous task group capability. Canada's first experience with a seaborne Standing Contingency Force (SCF) or a high-readiness task force made up of existing, designated maritime, land, air and special operations elements organized under a single integrated combat command structure is sufficient to prove that the concept is executable.
