'The world in a drop of water': the feminist vision of Patricia Howell

Article Abstract:

Women in Latin America have emerged as a significant force in the film industry and according to statistics provided in 1987 by the Cinemateca Cubano, there are over 300 active women directors in the media. Many of them are self-proclaimed feminists, but their concept of feminism varies with that of Western Europeans and North Americans. They dwell on issues such as domestic violence, rape and pregnancy, and aim at educating the less privileged. Unfortunately, these women filmmakers, barring a few exceptions such as Sara Gomez from Cuba and Maria Luisa Bemberg from Argentina, have not been recognized in the United States and Europe.
