Life's little luxuries

Article Abstract:

Most backcountry travellers like to bring along small luxuries that occupy little pack space. Those recommended include Cascade Designs' Therm-a-Rest sleeping pad, chair-conversion kit, and pillow; Mountain Safety Research's teapot; Ortleib's coffee-filter holder or Lyons' filter coffee bags; travel- size toiletries from The Body Shop or Outdoor Cosmetics; Lowe Alpine's Mountain Cap and Coati pull-on fleece; the absorbent and versatile Packtowl; and Ortleib's waterbag, which doubles as a pillow and a portable shower.

Real world tests: sleeping bags

Article Abstract:

Seven models of sleeping bags were tested by four mountain expedition teams. Down-filled bags begin to lose their insulating capacity when wet, but the Western Mountaineering Puma 880, Mountain Equipment Snowline Drilite, Field and Trek Rolling Cloud 1200, and North Face Solar Flare offset that quality with their year-round utility. Polyester fiber bags, the Vango Q7-400, Ajungilak Kompakt Super and Ajungilak Donna Twin, withstood temperatures of 40 degrees F, and are usually lower-priced than down bags.
