Maps with a message

Article Abstract:

World maps all suffer from the inherent impossibility of reproducing a spherical surface on a flat one. Projections such as Mercator, Peters, Hammer and Gall all sacrifice accuracy of scale, shape or both. Maps are also distorted by what they are centered on, with most maps having been based on North America, Europe or Africa, altering the representation of the rest of the world. The types of projections with their advantages and disadvantages along with historical examples are presented.

Good training

Article Abstract:

A diary of a week's train travel in the north and east of England records how geography may be studied economically by the use of a Rail Rover ticket. The Rail Rover rate of 8 pounds per day for adults and 6 pounds a day for children afforded unlimited travel and a wealth of human and physical geographical experiences. Using York as a base, some 2,635 kilometers were travelled from as far south as Retford to Berwick in the north and from Carlisle in the west to Cleethorpes in the east.

Maps designed to mislead

Article Abstract:

Maps play varied crucial roles in current events, not the least of which is propaganda dissemination. Maps are being used to distort some people's perception of the world, as illustrated by the inaccurate representation of Eastern Bloc countries in maps. The position of geographical features such as roads, settlements and lake boundaries are distorted, as are scales. Distortion also occurs through omission, such as those of contours and nuclear facilities.
