China's environmental governance in transition

Article Abstract:

China is rapidly developing its system of environmental governance by swiftly reforming and diversifying its environmental approaches, instruments, arrangements and legal regulations in the face of unprecedented economic and industrial growth levels. New relations between state, market and civil society, and an opening up towards the outside world characterize new modes of environmental governance that try to turn China's development path in more sustainable directions.

Institutional reform, economic changes, and local environmental management in China: The case of Guangdong Province

Article Abstract:

A study revealing the changes that have affected environmental management in Guangdon Province due to the changes in socio-economic landscapes is illustrated. In order to build the national capacity for environmental management China needs the presence of a wide array of actors, notably politicians, government officials, NGOs and citizens, who can act in concert as proponents of environmental protection.

The interpretation of ecological modernization in China

Article Abstract:

The report published by the Chinese Academy of Sciences on the ecological modernization of China is reviewed and its potential impact in China's environmental politics is highlighted. The specifics of this 'China-style' ecological modernization counterparts the European versions that have dominated the social sciences discourse on environmental reform until now are discussed.
