The course of summitry

Article Abstract:

The Group of Seven summits are not self-contained, but are part of an ongoing septennial cycle during which each country hosts a summit in turn. Dominant themes of one year, or one cycle, flow into the next. Each cycle is affected by the level of political stability in member countries. Dominant issues of the third septennium, which began in 1989, have been trade, debt, the environment, drugs, Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union.
