Nations and states in Russia and the West

Article Abstract:

Western political and security analysts have been forced to consider more deeply the complex interactions between nations and states because of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Although the terms 'nation' and 'state' are frequently considered synonymous, nations are constantly changing human communities while states are institutional structures often created by the actions of elites. Thus, the link between nations and the states that govern them is frequently problematic. A number of new books shed insights into Russia's relationships with the West and with other Eurasian nations.

Russia and Iran: A tactical alliance

Article Abstract:

Iran is probably the most important state in the Middle East to Russia, and the Yeltsin regime sees Iran as an important market for Russian arms and nuclear technology. Iran may also be an ally in Moscow's attempts to control Azerbaijan and the Taliban, and good relations with Tehran give Moscow the chance to demonstrate its diplomatic autonomy from the US. However there are limits to the relationship such as the weakness of the Iranian economy, reducing its ability to purchase military and civilian goods from Russia.

The United States and Iran: ready for rapprochement?

Article Abstract:

Prospects for improved ties between Iran and the US appeared to be brighter following the conciliatory gestures made by the presidents of both countries in 1997. However, it is argued that the dynamics of bilateral relations between the two countries hinder rapprochement. Nonetheless, rapprochement may be possible with changes in conditions similar to those that precipitated rapprochements between the US and other revolutionary regimes.
