Cross-cultural personality assessment in psychiatric populations: the NEO-PI-R in the People's Republic of China

Article Abstract:

It is important to carry out research to assess whether a psychological measure is appropriate for a different population from the one that it was designed to be used with. The Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) has been developed in the US, and a study has been carried out in the People's Republic of China (PRC) using a version in Mandarin. The study involved 2,000 psychiatric out- and inpatients at 13 locations in the PRC, and the model has been found useful in a Chinese context.

Psychophysical scaling of stressful life events

Article Abstract:

Holmes and Rahe's Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRC) weightings were tested with 115 undergraduate subjects. The SRRC was examined by Birnbaum and Sotoodeh in 1991 using psychophysical techniques. Their weightings were the same as Holmes and Rahe's original findings in 1967. Results showed that the data generated confirm the internal validity of the scale, except for adjusting the weight of some items.
