A body blow

Article Abstract:

UK Environment Secretary John Gummer's decision to refuse planning consent for an out-of-town leisure development near Eastleigh, Hampshire, has implications for further similar developments. Gummer considered that the proposal for a 10-screen multiplex, restaurants and entertainment centre was too large, and conflicted with other policies. He said the proposal should have either been scaled down or split to utilise available town-centre sites. Developers are concerned that the decision will limit multiplex development, and are frustrated by inconsistencies in planning decisions.

Golden age for the silver screen

Article Abstract:

Cinema admissions in the United Kingdom (UK) have risen from around 50 million in 1984 to 120 million in 1996. The rise in audience figures has resulted in the development of the multiplex cinema, with available film screens increasing from 1,215 in 1987 to 2,019 by 1995. Some observers are concerned that the continuing development of new multiplex sites will saturate the market. The increasingly buoyant film production industry in the UK has influenced multiplex operators such as Virgin Cinemas, which plans to open an additional 30 cinemas by the year 2000.
