Clean-up act

Article Abstract:

The UK's Environment Act, which is due to be published in spring 1999, will contain strict provisions relating to contaminated land. This legislation will be very significant for the property industry, especially as some of it will apply retrospectively. It will become increasingly important to commission detailed research into a potential development site's history and whether there is a possibility of contamination. Indeed, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and the Law Society believe that pre-acquisition environmental planning should be compulsory.

So long, farewell, it's time to say goodbye...

Article Abstract:

The abolition of several Welsh counties and councils and the introduction of 22 new authorities is expected to further encourage businesses to move to the area. Although 1000 local authority jobs will be lost as a result of the changing management the country's upgraded infrastructure and reputation for productivity is thought to positively influence trade and industry to relocate. Wales has much experience in manufacturing, although other industries such as finance are actively encouraged.

Regaining lost ground

Article Abstract:

The Welsh Development Agency had received much criticism in a report by the Commons Public Accounts Committee in 1993, resulting in the resignation of chairman Gwyn Jones and property director Philip Head. A review of grant payments was also instigated by Welsh Secretary John Redwood. However the WDA has recently been restructured which has helped it to target its services more effectively. The WDA has attracted major companies into Wales, including British Airways Avionics Engineering.
