Exchanging marts

Article Abstract:

UK livestock markets are facing many pressures. Three livestock markets, including Banbury market, closed in the first half of 1998. Banbury market had operated since the 11th century. One of the main sources of pressure is supermarkets. They perceive stock markets as a cause of higher British prices and they believe they do not support the welfare of animals. Other challenges include pressures on market site owners to sell the land for development, and planning limitations on new out-of-town market developments.

Scotching feudalism

Article Abstract:

The Scottish Office hopes to expand community involvement in land use and encourage diversity as part of its plans to remove outdated land laws in Scotland. Feudal tenure is expected to be abolished and replaced with crofting reform, agricultural holdings reform and outright ownership. Most Scottish landowners generally approve of the move, with the proposals perceived as evolutionary. Some critics are concerned about the governement's proposed powers of compulsory land purchase, however.
