Eastern promise

Article Abstract:

The East End of London, England, is undergoing a process of regeneration. The terminal buildings for the Channel Tunnel are planned to be completed at Newham by the year 2003. The borough has received 35 million pounds sterling to help with other regeneration projects. New office buildings in Tower Hamlets are being built in the hope of attracting companies from the city. Hackney has suffered from having a reputation a high incidence of crime and improbity in the local council. Plans for a underground rail link and the construction of a commercial and leisure centre may help to revive the area.

The renaissance of Paternoster

Article Abstract:

The Paternoster Square, London, England, has been subject to constant delays regarding its redevelopment. The first plans to redesign the 5.3 acre site, which encompasses St Paul's Cathedral, were drawn up in 1987. Since that date there have been two other plans to redevelop the area which have failed to come to fruition. The latest plan has been designed by Sir William Whitfield. It will cost over 200 million pounds sterling. The new design for 950,215 sq ft of space incorporates retail and office buildings. The site is owned by Mitsubishi Estates.

Sounds of silence

Article Abstract:

There has been steady demand for office property in Hatfield, England, and Welwyn, England, since autumn 1997. There is now almost no secondhand space, and almost no speculative development has been undertaken. There has been a trend towards developers seeking prelets. There has also been very little speculative retail development in the area, but there have been positive results from the decision in 1994 to convert the 46,450 sq mt Galleria in Hatfield into an 'outlet' centre.
