A blueprint for health clubs

Article Abstract:

Architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris won the competition to design the prestigious Broadgate Club West health and leisure club, London, England, in Dec 1996. The design incorporates creative use of colour, light and materials, an important feature being a glass wall with blue back-lighting which runs the length of the interior. This helps to replace the qualities which a swimming pool would supply in terms of light and movement. The changing rooms are opulent with a glass ceiling and free-standing units, and artistic signage brings additional colour into the gym.

Conflict heightened by Western meddling

Article Abstract:

The civil war which has created chaos in Liberia since 1989 can be partly attributed to the hostility of Nigeria and the US to Charles Taylor, who entered the country in Dec 1989 and caused it to become divided. A political stalemate emerged, but Taylor successfully established a viable economy in the part of the country he controlled, known as Greater Liberia. It is only now that the importance of Taylor's policies is beginning to be recognised.
