Gambling on our heritage

Article Abstract:

The UK's Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded 286 million pounds sterling in grants to 478 projects which involve the restoration of old buildings and other structures. Particular attention has been given to museums, churches and urban parks. Some observers are very concerned about this trend, as they feel that the fund is being used by the government as a way of replacing central government funding for such schemes. This was originally denied by the government, but many heritage-related bodies are now seeing a reduction in their funding.

HRH's demolition men

Article Abstract:

There have been a considerable number of examples over recent decades of UK government ministers allowing significant buildings or structures to be demolished. These include 'The Stacks,' five listed Georgian warehouses in London's Docklands, and the famous Euston Arch, at the entrance to Euston railway station. This may again be the case with the Brynmawr Rubber Factory in Ebbw Vale, Wales, which William Hague, secretary of state for Wales, could allow to be demolished.

A fantasy, lovingly rebuilt

Article Abstract:

Uppark, the Sussex mansion which was gutted by fire in 1990, will become a more popular tourist attraction following its restoration than it was before it was damaged, as many people will want to see the results of extensive investment in its restoration. Restoration is a very modern approach, reflecting people's fascination with anything historical. In previous centuries, owners of homes of this kind which were damaged by fire would have built a new home instead.
