Hamas denies role in NY bomb scare

Article Abstract:

Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) has denied involvement in a planned terrorist attack in the subway in New York. Two men were shot in a raid on an apartment and literature was found in their apartment suggesting a link with Hamas, but Hamas itself has denied involvement with the two men. One of the men had previously illegally attempted to enter the US and had sought asylum on the grounds that he was seen as a terrorist in Israel. It is not known whether he was eventually allowed to enter to allow the authorities to track him, or whether immigration authorities had been too lax.

Israeli election rivals make early start

Article Abstract:

The main contenders for the elections to take place in Israel on May 17, 1999, are current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Labour opposition leader Ehud Barak and Amnon Shahak, who plans to run as leader of a centre party. Opinion polls indicate that Shahak would win a straight battle with either of the other two main candidates, but that he would be behind both of the others if there were a three-sided contest. Netanyahu's Likud party and the Labour party hope that a prolonged campaign will create time for Shahak to make mistakes.
