How to help a drama out of a crisis

Article Abstract:

BBC television has a two year, 10 million pounds sterling contract with Cinema Verity for the soap opera 'Eldorado,' which is set in Spain. Newspaper reviews were very bad, but the timing of the launch was wrong. July is the lowest viewing time of year and the Olympics interrupted the scheduling after only three weeks. The programme's average viewing was 5 million. There is no centre of action and fast scene changes with 31 characters are bewildering. Filming with foreign sales in mind produces some strange angles.

A flying start, but will they crash?

Article Abstract:

ITV franchise changeovers have provided more populist programming in 1993. ITV and Channel 4 account for 55% of viewing excluding satellite. ITV tripled its Sunday evening audience by moving Sir Harry Secombe's 'Highway' from 6.30 pm to show family films. The timing of several programmed has caused the BBC and Channel 4 to re-schedule their broadcasts. The new ITV companies rely on soaps but have more current affairs and documentaries than commercial channel elsewhere in the world.

Game for a laugh no longer

Article Abstract:

The Board of Governors of BBC Television intends to reject game shows, people shows and 'derivative formula' comedy programmes. Respectable, creative entertainment is planned, but there is not much available. Most audiences are below 10 million for BBC light entertainment programmes compared to up to 18 million for ITV. People shows and sensationalised current affairs programmes focusing on sex and diseases have been broadcast due to a lack of new comedy and variety material.
