I restored it to glory on my knees

Article Abstract:

David Swift was born with muscular atrophy and, after being told to stop working in 1976 at the age of 42, he and his wife bought a ruined farmhouse in Clifton near Nottingham, UK for 15,000 pounds sterling and proceeded to restore it. As they only had his disability pension they collected bricks, beams, guttering and everything they needed from the numerous sites being demolished in old Nottingham. He could not stand up so he did all the work on his knees. His childhood was very hard with no allowances or sympathy for his disability.

No more power, no more glory

Article Abstract:

The Catholic Church is becoming increasingly marginalised in Ireland, especially as the government seeks to enforce morality and equality by law. Most Irish people now judge issues on the basis of their private consciences, rather than according to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Furthermore, there are clear signs that the government and consumer-based industries are attempting to take the Church's place in the social order. There is still strong spirituality in Ireland, but it is no longer focused on the Catholic Church.

Books bound for glory

Article Abstract:

The Folio Society, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 1997, has always strived to produce high quality books at relatively low prices. It publishes a wide range of books, and is careful not to overlook minority interests. The books are characterised by very high quality bindings and illustrations. It is shortly to stage an exhibition where a selection of the illustrations and book covers which it has commissioned will be on display.
