Sex and the third chimpanzee

Article Abstract:

Professor Jared Diamond, the Californian zoologist, won the 1992 Rhone-Poulenc Science Book Prize of 10,000 pounds sterling for 'The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee.' The book analyses the influence of humans' animal origins on life today. Professor Diamond was researching bird ecosystems in Papua New Guinea and became concerned about their increasing destruction. He wrote the book to promote political action on ecological problems. It discusses the collapse of society in Easter Island through environmental disaster and credits the invention of language with the extinction of the Neanderthals.

Nothing but trouble in the nuclear pipeline

Article Abstract:

The Sellafield Thorp (Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant) in Cumbria, England took 15 years to build at a cost of 2.8 billion pounds sterling, but due to the collapse of nuclear power station building programmes may never be used. When Thorp was approved in 1978 there were plans for many nuclear reactor power plants to be built throughout the UK and overseas. However, the collapse of oil prices made oil powered generation much cheaper and the Three Mile Island accident drew attention to the safety aspects. There is now little demand for plutonium which Thorp was to produce from spent fuel.

Cheap power: as simple as ABC: Nuclear Electric wants to build a third Sizewell station with two pressurised water reactors

Article Abstract:

Sizewell A nuclear power station was built in 1960 and Sizewll B, the first pressurised water reactor in the UK will be completed in 1994. The new one has a double-walled dome about 72 metres high. Engineer Brian George designed Sizewell B to quality and safety standards. Nuclear Electric and Westinghouse plan to build two replicas in Taiwan and two more at Sizewell. A twin-reactor station could cut the average cost of power to under 3 pence per kilowatt hour. Its construction would be cheaper as the preliminary work has already been done for the B station.
