Supermarket 2007

Article Abstract:

Supermarkets were until recently merely rather uninteresting places where people went just to buy food. However, many supermarket chains are now expanding into non-related areas, such as financial services, and offer services such as cafes, newstands and non-dispensing pharmacies. They now have much longer opening hours, and some are even opening 24 hours a day at certain times of year. It will not be long before people are able to cater for all their household and financial needs at a single, very large supermarket outlet.

The homecoming

Article Abstract:

Very few people turned out to witness the return of British au pair Louise Woodward, who has been convicted of manslaughter in the US, to her home village of Elton, England. This was a strange ending to a case that has been characterized all along by strange twists and turns. There are still many unanswered questions, including what will happen to the trust fund set up for her, which now contains around 250,000 pounds sterling, and why her mother has agreed to sell her story to the press for a very large sum.

The higher they fly, the harder they fall

Article Abstract:

The dismissal of a powerful executive woman tends to attract a great deal of media interest. When a leading male executive is dismissed, the media simply reports the facts. In the case of the dismissal of a female executive, many details are revealed about her personal life. More attention is given to her domestic arrangements and personal characteristics than to her ability to perform well at work. Often, her physical appearance is discussed at length, which would never be the case with a man.
