E-mail scripts seen as analogous to phone-ins

Article Abstract:

The widespread use of e-mail extends to the pharmacy industry but new legal and regulatory issues relating to the effect of technology on physician-patient-pharmacist are arising from the development of electronic approaches for drug dispensation. A legal case involving Walgreen Co is an interesting example. The firm had conducted a pilot test where 10 doctors forwarded e-mail prescription orders to a Walgreen pharmacy. The Wisconsin Pharmacy Examining Board held that the firm violated a state law requiring written prescription orders to be signed. A court overturned the Board ruling.
