Waiting for Dobbin

Article Abstract:

Women often fail to recognize the attractions of kind, reliable men such as Dobbin, one of the characters in William Makepeace Thackeray's novel 'Vanity Fair,' until they have been hurt by men a few times. They are strongly attracted to men who seem exciting and possibly slightly dangerous, and do not realize that these men will not make them happy. However, they eventually recognize that kind, reliable men, although not necessarily very exciting, are the best option because they are not self-obsessed and are good listeners.

With friends like these

Article Abstract:

It is common for graduates to find that they socialize extensively with their colleagues when they start work. However, they often feel that they do not really get to know their colleagues on more than a superficial level. This is a sharp contrast with student life, where attention often focuses on getting to know what people are really like. Some observers believe that lack of bonding between colleagues is a growing problem, especially as companies are downsized and people are obliged to work increasingly long hours.

Our marriage was the only fatality

Article Abstract:

Miranda Vicente simply wanted to survive when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She did not really give any consideration to how she would feel if she did survive. She wanted to have reconstruction surgery after a double mastectomy, but her husband Franco was opposed to this, and this caused a rift in their relationship. He felt as if she was rejecting him, and emphasizes that cancer has a significant impact on people other than the actual patient.
