Effect of laser pre-treatment on the machining performance of aluminum/SiC MMC

Article Abstract:

High power diode lasers (HPDL) can be used to pre-treat the surface of an aluminum based Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) to improve the machining performance of that material when machined with high speed steel cutting tools. The laser heating and self-quenching of the material modified the matrix properties and the machining properties were then assessed by measuring tool wear and edge conditions, cutting forces, surface finish, and sub-surface damage which shows that pre-treatment gave less wear, lower forces and less sub-surface damage.

Monte Carlo simulation of particle-cracking damage evolution in metal matrix composites

Article Abstract:

A microstructural Monte Carlo simulation method is proposed to predict the volume fraction evolution of damaged particles due to particle-cracking for metal matrix composites with randomly distributed spheroidal particles. The factors that affect the damage evolution are investigated and the effects of particle shape and damage strength on damage evolution are discussed.
