Genetic resources help ensure world food supply

Article Abstract:

Genetic resources are elemental to the development of sustainable systems of agriculture that ensure the world's food supply. The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) is based on this thesis and its gene banks assemble a massive ex situ stock of genetic resources for food and agriculture. This collection denotes a large percentage of genetic diversity available for diverse crop gene pools. A multilateral system ensures worldwide access to CGIAR supported plant genetic resources. The conservation and sustainable use of these resources is central to the CGIAR's action plan.

Supply, demand control market for natural gas

Article Abstract:

The demand and supply of natural gas will determine its price in the U.S. due to deregulation of its prices by Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Industrial use accounts for two-fifths of the total natural gas consumption. The estimated industrial and residential demand for 2010 shows little if any increase over 1994 consumption. Total U.S. natural gas consumption is forecasted to increase at an annual rate of 1 to 1.5 percent. The current rate of supply is likely to be sufficient to meet the needs of 2010.

Low-dose pesticides and world food supply

Article Abstract:

Development of low-dosage pesticides has determined regulatory bodies to pass legilastion requiring a reduction in pesticide applied per ha. Low-dosage pesticides are environmentally friendly products, and offer superior performance. Crop-protection products are important in meeting food and fiber requirements of an increasing world population. Agricultural chemical companies are continuing their research of genetically engineered organisms to control agricultural pests.
