Glittering prizes

Article Abstract:

The Institution of Incorporate Engineers (IIE) believes that women should be encouraged to seek careers in engineering. The Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award is sponsored by the IIE, and was won this year by Kim Dennis, an infrastructure support manager. She believes that the award is important in encouraging women into engineering. Cathy Day, winner of the women into Science and Engineering price for second place in the Young Woman Engineer of the Year competition, was discouraged at school from taking an engineering apprenticeship. Male engineering graduates outnumber women by six to one, and modern apprenticeships are similarly imbalanced.

High fliers

Article Abstract:

A group of businesses and universities based in Bristol, UK, has agreed to support a professional aerospace development scheme for graduates. The move can be attributed to the challenges posed by large-scale restructuring and international competition to the UK aerospace industry. The integrated graduate development scheme consists of part-time modular MSc program which, in turn, involves a one-week intensive course using various teaching methods.
