Institutes Reinvent Themselves As Part of Well-Funded Reform
Article Abstract:
The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is the parent organization of China's network of research laboratories. A 3-year, $650 million project of China's State Council, called the Knowledge Innovation Program, involves turning 40 of CAS's institutes into 9 larger facilities. In the reform, scientists will have more authority over personnel decisions and will relieve institutes of housing and medical care responsibilities.

The course of reform at the Chinese Academy of Sciences
Article Abstract:
The Chinese Academy of Sciences is taking steps to make its research institutes more open and competitive. Spending priorities have been adjusted, and priorities for funding major projects have been developed. Permanent staff is being cut through attrition and transfers.

Scientists seek allies in fight against pseudoscience
Article Abstract:
The renewed emphasis on science in China has caused an increase in scientific fraud and pseudoscience, such as a design for a midhull propeller. The scientific community is actively fighting the trend by exposing so-called inventions.
