Lead is dead: Can lead free replacement fuels protect car engines?
Article Abstract:
The percentage of vehicles using leaded petrol is now thought low enough for the government in the UK to ban it from 01 January 2000. The original reason for the addition of lead to petrol was to provide an octane boost, and later it was recognized that lead reduced valve seat recession (VSR). Some motorists who own vehicles that use leaded fuel can safety use unleaded petrol with no adjustment, but others will need minor alterations to ignition timing. There are three alternatives for vehicles that require leaded petrol, switching to lead replacement petrol (LRP), us an anti-wear additive (AWA) or modify the vehicle's engine.

Improving engines
Article Abstract:
The EC's European Programme on Emissions. Fuels and Engine Technologies is the initial European research project to examine emissions through linking engines and diesel and petrol fuels. Environmental concerns have put new challenges before engine design engineers. Customers demand greater power, durability and lower fuel consumption for the engines without accepting a higher price.
