Ocean color and CO2

Article Abstract:

Scientists know that a significant amount of CO2 is absorbed by the ocean and used by phytoplankton. However, the rate at which CO2 is absorbed by the ocean is not known. A spacecraft called Seastar will be launched over the West Coast on Aug 1993 to gather ocean color readings. Since 99.5% of the oceans' color is indicative of phytoplankton population, the color readings will allow scientists to estimate the CO2 absorption rate.

Biofuel development; Americans, Finns discuss strategies

Article Abstract:

The United States and Finland are working to develop biofuels under a Memorandum of Understanding. The biomass used is derived from forest and agricultural products and wastes. Biofuels are a renewable energy source and can be derived from domestic sources. Fuels made from biomass are more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels. Research on wood as biofuel and on ethanol production from biomass is discussed.

Going, going, gone? Plant Species Extinction in the 21st Century

Article Abstract:

The rapid decline in plant species of small islands indicates that two-thirds of all plant species could become extinct by the year 2100. The chances of stopping, or even slowing, this rate of destruction are slim, but not yet impossible.
