Seeing with surperconductors

Article Abstract:

Tiny devices made of superconducting materials that act as sensors of photons and other particles are revolutionizing a wide range of research and technology fields, including homeland security, analysis of defects in microchips, astronomy, chemical analysis and particle physics. The two types of detectors include the thermal sensors, which depend on how a photon's energy increases the temperature of the detector material, and pair-breaking detectors, which sense how a photon disrupts some of the pairs of electrons that cause the superconductivity.

The power of riboswitches

Article Abstract:

Ribonucleic acid (RNA) segments act like on-off switches for genes in bacteria and can enable the development of new classes of antimicrobial drugs to combat human diseases. These self-regulatory RNA molecules called riboswitches regulate many fundamental processes in microbes, making them potential targets for new antimicrobial drugs.

Maverick against the Mendelians

Article Abstract:

Michael Wigler explains the symptoms and the after-effects of autism, a genetically disorder. The findings reveal that the various mutations, including the Mendelian inheritance patterns lead to the existence of the disorder over generations.
