II. Genotype-environment interaction in the schizophrenia spectrum: Qualitative observations

Article Abstract:

The Finnish Adoptive Family Study of Schizophrenia reveals that the adoptees appear to be resiliently protected against a pathologic outcome when either genetic liability is low or the rearing environment is healthy. The way in which multiple methods partially confirm one another is illustrated with six qualitative vignettes, together with quantitative measures and categorical diagnoses from the same families suggesting where further exploration of gene-environment interaction is needed.

I. Genotype-environment interaction in the schizophrenia spectrum: Genetic liability and global family ratings in the Finish adoption study

Article Abstract:

Finnish adoption study reinforces the important perspective that there is multiplicity of pathways from rearing families and biological families to later adoptee outcomes. It is noted that genetic liability is a more strongly predictive variable based on broad schizophrenia spectrum diagnoses of biological mothers than based narrowly defined typically schizophrenic mothers.
