Choosing when to be a cleaner-fish mimic

Article Abstract:

The bluestriped fangblenny fish, which aggressively attacks other coral-reef fish, can turn off the mimetic colors that disguise it as the benign bluestreak cleaner wrasse, Labroides dimidiatus, and assume a radically different appearance. This opportunistic facultative mimicry extends the fangblenny's scope by allowing it to blend into shoals of small reef fish and to remain inconspicuous at cleaning stations.

Disruptive coloration and background pattern matching

Article Abstract:

The two key predictions such as patterns on the body's outline should be particularly effective in promoting concealment and that highly contrasting colours should enhance this disruptive effect are tested. Survival analysis supported the predictions, indicating that disruptive coloration is an effective means of camouflage, above and beyond background pattern matching.

Grasshoppers don't play possum

Article Abstract:

Grasshoppers adopted a characteristic static pose when grabbed by frogs, such that three body parts were stretched in different directions, making the grasshoppers more difficult to swallow. The adoption of an immobile pose when an animal is physically restrained is also called tonic immobility, thanatosis and playing possum.
